What is this construction crew labor cost calculator?
This construction labor calculator estimates the cost of a crew over one defined work period. It separates hours at two cost rates and adds other crew expenses, helping estimators build a labor allowance without confusing crew size with elapsed project duration.
How to use the calculator
Enter crew members and regular hours per worker for the same period. Add premium-rate hours separately, along with the loaded rate you expect to pay for those hours. Add project-specific expenses only when they are not already included in the rates.
Check the input assumptions
Review the help text beneath each field before calculating. Enter amounts in US dollars where shown and use consistent units. Change one assumption at a time to understand which inputs affect your result.
Formula and worked example
Example calculation
Four workers each have 40 regular hours at $35 and five premium-rate hours at $50. Regular labor costs $5,600 and premium labor costs $1,000. Adding $300 in other costs gives $6,900 across 180 person-hours, or $38.33 per person-hour.
These numbers illustrate the calculation; they are not recommended rates or industry benchmarks.
How to interpret your result
Use the result as the labor component of a larger estimate. Add materials, equipment, subcontractors, and other project expenses separately. If crew members have different rates or schedules, calculate each group and combine the totals.
What the estimate leaves out
The model uses supplied rates and does not calculate statutory overtime, union agreements, prevailing wages, taxes, or payroll obligations. Productivity, rework, and delays affect required hours and must be reflected in your estimate.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator apply an overtime multiplier?
No. Enter the loaded premium hourly cost yourself. The tool does not infer which hours qualify or which pay rules apply to the work.
How do I estimate a mixed-skill crew?
Calculate groups with the same rates and hours separately, then add the totals. A weighted average is acceptable for early planning if it accurately reflects the expected labor mix.
Are hours entered per person or for the whole crew?
Enter hours per worker. The calculator multiplies those hours by crew size to produce total person-hours and labor cost.
Where should I include travel costs?
Add relevant project travel to other crew costs if it is not already in your hourly cost. Keep reimbursed expenses and time-based labor costs distinct.
What if there are no work hours?
The total can still include other crew costs, but cost per person-hour is undefined. Check whether hours are missing before using that scenario.
