What is this commercial cleaning labor hours calculator?
This calculator turns cleanable floor area and a production rate into an estimate of cleaning labor. A person-hour means one person working for one hour. The tool also estimates elapsed time when several crew members divide the workload evenly.
How to use the calculator
Measure the area covered by your cleaning scope. Enter a production rate from similar work at that site, then add person-hours for tasks not covered by that rate. Enter crew size and monthly visits. Avoid adding restroom or setup time again if it is already included in the production rate.
Check the input assumptions
Review the help text beneath each field before calculating. Enter amounts in US dollars where shown and use consistent units. Change one assumption at a time to understand which inputs affect your result.
Formula and worked example
Example calculation
A 12,000-square-foot area at 3,000 square feet per person-hour needs four person-hours. Add one person-hour for other tasks for five total. Two crew members sharing work evenly need 2.5 elapsed hours per visit. Twenty visits require 100 person-hours for the month.
These numbers illustrate the calculation; they are not recommended rates or industry benchmarks.
How to interpret your result
Use the result to discuss workload and build a labor budget. A larger crew reduces modeled elapsed time but does not reduce total person-hours. Compare the estimate with actual visit logs and adjust the rate when scope or site conditions change.
What the estimate leaves out
The tool does not supply an industry production standard. Furniture density, soil level, disinfection requirements, equipment, and restricted access can change the work rate. Some tasks cannot be divided evenly, so crew duration is an idealized estimate.
Frequently asked questions
Is the example production rate a cleaning standard?
No. It is an illustrative input, not a recommended rate. Use observations from comparable tasks and conditions, and check the estimate against a site walk-through.
What is the difference between person-hours and crew hours?
Five person-hours could mean one person working five hours or two people working 2.5 hours each. Crew elapsed time describes the duration of the visit; person-hours describe total labor.
Should I enter the whole building area?
Use only the area included in the scope and production rate. Exclude spaces that are not cleaned, and handle rooms with very different task requirements separately.
Where do I include setup and restroom work?
Add the combined person-hours in the additional-time field if those tasks are outside your area rate. Do not count them twice when the rate already includes them.
Does doubling the crew always halve the visit length?
Only in this simplified model. Limited equipment, task dependencies, and small work areas may prevent equal work sharing. Validate staffing changes in practice.
