What is sales pipeline coverage?
This sales pipeline coverage calculator helps you compare open opportunities with your remaining revenue target.
Pipeline coverage is the ratio of open opportunity value to the revenue you still need to win. A $250,000 pipeline against a $100,000 target gives 2.5× coverage. The right ratio depends on how much eligible pipeline typically becomes won revenue.
Use a matching win rate
This model uses a value-based win rate. A deal-count win rate may be misleading if deal sizes differ substantially.
How to use the pipeline coverage calculator
Choose a period, subtract already booked revenue from its target, and enter only opportunities that could realistically close before the period ends. Add a win rate from comparable historical opportunities.
Keep the revenue basis consistent
Do not compare annual contract value in pipeline with a monthly recognized-revenue target. Use the same value definition on both sides.
Step-by-step planning checklist
- Set one planning period and subtract revenue already won from the goal.
- Include only open deals that can realistically close in that period.
- Use a win rate from comparable opportunities measured by value.
- Review the coverage gap alongside large-deal concentration and expected close dates before deciding how much new pipeline is needed.
Formula and worked example
With a $100,000 remaining target and 25% win rate, required pipeline is $400,000, or 4× coverage. An eligible pipeline of $250,000 leaves a $150,000 shortfall and produces $62,500 of probability-weighted wins under the entered assumption.
Treat the result as a scenario
The expected-wins figure multiplies the whole pipeline by one rate. It does not account for the probability of each individual deal.
How to interpret a coverage gap
A shortfall suggests a need for more qualified opportunities, stronger conversion, or a reassessment of timing. Extra pipeline is not necessarily healthy if it includes stale or poorly qualified deals.
What this tool excludes
The model does not forecast sales-cycle slippage, deal concentration, changing deal size, or stage-specific probabilities. Review those separately before committing a forecast.
Frequently asked questions
Is 3× pipeline coverage enough?
Only if your pipeline quality, timing, and win rate support it. At a value-based win rate of 25%, the simple model requires 4× coverage.
A 3× ratio implies roughly one-third of eligible pipeline value must be won. Your actual conversion and timing need to support that assumption.
Should I include closed-won deals?
No. Subtract closed-won revenue from the target and enter only open eligible pipeline.
Including wins in both pipeline and target progress would double-count them. Use the remaining goal and only the open opportunities still available to close.
What happens at a zero win rate?
No finite pipeline can meet a positive target at a zero win rate. The calculator requires a positive rate.
If recent conversion is zero, review qualification and sales-cycle evidence before choosing a positive scenario. Increasing pipeline alone does not fix a zero-conversion model.
Can I use quarterly targets?
Yes. Use quarterly remaining targets and pipeline eligible to close in that quarter.
Use a win-rate history that is relevant to the same segment and timing. A broad annual rate may not represent late-quarter opportunities.
Does this guarantee quota attainment?
No. It is a planning scenario based on your conversion assumption, not a forecast guarantee.
Review individual deals before making a commitment. One unusually large opportunity can make overall coverage look strong while leaving substantial risk.
