What is this survey invitation target calculator?
A survey invitation target calculator works backward from a desired number of completed responses. It divides that target by an assumed completion rate and rounds up to whole invitations. The result is an expected-volume estimate rather than a guaranteed response count.
How to use the calculator
Choose a completion target based on your project needs. Enter an expected rate from a comparable audience and channel. Test a lower rate as a cautious scenario, and check that your eligible contact list is large enough for the invitation count.
Check the input assumptions
Review the help text beneath each field before calculating. Enter amounts in US dollars where shown and use consistent units. Change one assumption at a time to understand which inputs affect your result.
Formula and worked example
Example calculation
For 200 completed surveys at a 25% completion rate, plan 800 unique invitations. At a lower 20% rate, the same target would require 1,000 invitations.
These numbers illustrate the calculation; they are not recommended rates or industry benchmarks.
How to interpret your result
Use the estimate to assess list size and outreach workload. A rounded expected count is not a commitment that exactly that many people will respond. Monitor actual participation during the campaign and revise expectations.
What the estimate leaves out
This tool does not calculate statistical sample size, margin of error, confidence, or response probability guarantees. The rate is assumed constant and does not account for list exhaustion or changing audience mix.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a sample-size calculator?
No. You supply the desired completion count. The tool only estimates invitations needed at an assumed rate.
Why does the calculator round upward?
Invitations are whole counts. Rounding down could leave expected completions below the target.
Can I enter a zero completion rate?
No. A positive target cannot be reached at a zero expected rate, so the form requires a positive percentage.
Which rate should I use for a new campaign?
Use a clearly labeled assumption and compare several scenarios. Do not treat the default as a benchmark for your audience.
Will 800 invitations guarantee 200 responses?
No. At 25%, 200 is the expected count. Actual participation can vary and the assumption may be inaccurate.
