What is this website data transfer calculator?

This calculator estimates data transfer by multiplying page views by an average delivered page size. It adds other traffic and a planning allowance. It measures transferred data volume, not server storage or website loading speed.

How to use the calculator

Use monthly page views and measured average transferred MB per view. Include downloads and other traffic outside that average separately. Choose an allowance for uncertainty and compare the result with your host’s actual billing definition.

Check the input assumptions

Review the help text beneath each field before calculating. Enter amounts in US dollars where shown and use consistent units. Change one assumption at a time to understand which inputs affect your result.

Formula and worked example

Page transfer GB = page views × transferred MB per view ÷ 1,000. Base GB = page transfer + other GB. Planned GB = base GB × (1 + allowance ÷ 100).

Example calculation

One hundred thousand page views averaging 1.5 MB create 150 decimal GB of transfer. Add 20 GB of other traffic for 170 GB. A 20% allowance gives 204 GB.

These numbers illustrate the calculation; they are not recommended rates or industry benchmarks.

How to interpret your result

Compare the estimate with observed hosting or CDN usage. Browser caching and compressed assets can change bytes delivered, while bots and large downloads can add traffic not represented by ordinary page views.

What the estimate leaves out

The tool does not predict bandwidth speed, concurrency, or hosting performance. It assumes a representative transfer average and uses decimal MB and GB throughout.

Frequently asked questions

Is this website storage space?

No. Storage is data kept on disk; transfer is data delivered over time.

Should I use page views or visitors?

Page views. One visitor can load several pages.

Does caching reduce the result?

Use a measured transfer average that already reflects relevant caching. Do not subtract the same benefit twice.

Where do video downloads belong?

Include them in other transfer if they are billed by the service you are planning for and are outside the page average.

Will the estimate match my host’s bill?

Not necessarily. Check whether the host counts CDN traffic, bots, uploads, or other transfers differently.
