What is this commercial mowing time calculator?
This calculator converts net mowable area into labor effort using your observed productivity rate. It adds separate work such as setup or trimming, then shows an ideal elapsed duration for the crew. Person-hours measure total labor; crew hours describe elapsed time under an even-work assumption.
How to use the calculator
Measure the surface actually being mowed. Enter an area-per-worker-hour rate appropriate to the terrain, equipment, obstacles, and grass conditions. Add person-hours for tasks outside that rate, then enter crew size and loaded hourly cost.
Check the input assumptions
Review the help text beneath each field before calculating. Enter amounts in US dollars where shown and use consistent units. Change one assumption at a time to understand which inputs affect your result.
Formula and worked example
Example calculation
An area of 100,000 square feet at 20,000 square feet per worker-hour needs five mowing person-hours. One additional hour gives six person-hours. Two equally productive workers could complete that workload in three ideal elapsed hours, at $150 labor cost using $25 per hour.
These numbers illustrate the calculation; they are not recommended rates or industry benchmarks.
How to interpret your result
Use person-hours for labor budgeting and the crew-time figure as a starting schedule estimate. Adding workers does not necessarily shorten a task evenly when access, equipment, or sequential steps limit parallel work.
What the estimate leaves out
This model does not choose safe equipment speeds or operating practices. It excludes equipment ownership, fuel, transport, and downtime unless included in the relevant inputs. The productivity default is illustrative, not a recommended rate.
Frequently asked questions
Is the production rate per crew or per worker?
Per worker-hour. If your records give a crew rate, convert it to person-hour productivity before entering it.
Should parking lots be included in the area?
No. Use net mowable area and exclude surfaces outside the mowing scope.
How do I include trimming and cleanup?
Add their combined person-hours in other labor unless the production rate already includes them.
Does doubling the crew halve actual time?
Only in the idealized equal-work model. Equipment availability and site layout can limit real time savings.
Is this a customer price?
No. It estimates labor cost only. Equipment, overhead, travel, and profit require separate consideration.
