What is this business waste diversion rate calculator?
A weight-based diversion rate compares qualifying diverted material with total recorded material in the same reporting scope. This calculator adds the recycling, organics, and other qualifying streams you enter, then compares that sum with diversion plus disposal.
How to use the calculator
Select one period and consistent collection boundaries. Obtain comparable weights for each stream, using pounds throughout. Include only diversion that qualifies under your chosen reporting method, and place each material weight in one category only.
Check the input assumptions
Review the help text beneath each field before calculating. Enter amounts in US dollars where shown and use consistent units. Change one assumption at a time to understand which inputs affect your result.
Formula and worked example
Example calculation
With 1,200 pounds recycled, 400 pounds of organics diverted, and 100 pounds of other qualifying diversion, diverted weight is 1,700 pounds. Add 800 pounds disposed for a 2,500-pound total. The diversion rate is 68%.
These numbers illustrate the calculation; they are not recommended rates or industry benchmarks.
How to interpret your result
Compare the rate with total waste generation as well as disposal weight. A higher diversion percentage can occur even while total material generation grows. Review both the percentage and absolute weights when evaluating changes.
What the estimate leaves out
The calculator does not decide whether a destination or treatment qualifies as diversion. Contamination, rejected loads, and downstream losses can affect recorded outcomes. It does not estimate greenhouse-gas benefits.
Frequently asked questions
Can I mix pounds and tons?
No. Convert every input to the same unit first. The displayed weight labels here use pounds.
Can I use container volume instead of weight?
Not directly. Different materials have different densities. Obtain weights or use a documented conversion method outside this tool.
Does everything placed in recycling count?
Not necessarily. Use qualifying processed amounts consistent with your reporting method and account for known rejected material.
Does diversion mean waste was prevented?
No. Diversion concerns the handling of recorded material. Waste prevention means avoiding generation and needs a separate measure.
What does a zero total show?
The tool reports no material recorded rather than presenting an unsupported 0% or 100% diversion rate.
