What is this bulk mulch volume calculator?

A bulk mulch volume calculator converts square feet of coverage and inches of depth into cubic yards. It adds an optional volume allowance and estimates material and delivery spending. The result is geometric volume, not a recommendation for how deeply to apply mulch.

How to use the calculator

Measure the total coverage area and choose the project depth using your site requirements. Enter any additional ordering allowance, the supplier’s price per cubic yard, and fixed delivery charges. Confirm the supplier’s minimum quantity and order increments before buying.

Check the input assumptions

Review the help text beneath each field before calculating. Enter amounts in US dollars where shown and use consistent units. Change one assumption at a time to understand which inputs affect your result.

Formula and worked example

Base cubic yards = area in square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324. Planned volume = base volume × (1 + allowance ÷ 100). Total cost = planned volume × price per cubic yard + fixed charges.

Example calculation

Two thousand square feet at three inches deep require about 18.52 cubic yards. A 10% allowance raises the estimate to about 20.37 cubic yards. At $40 per cubic yard plus $100 delivery, the unrounded calculation gives a total of $914.81.

These numbers illustrate the calculation; they are not recommended rates or industry benchmarks.

How to interpret your result

The display rounds volume to two decimals, while the cost calculation uses the full volume. If your supplier sells only whole or half cubic yards, round the order quantity to the permitted increment and request a revised quote.

What the estimate leaves out

The calculation assumes uniform depth over the measured area. It does not model existing material, settlement, slope, compaction, taxes, or supplier quantity increments. Application depth and suitability must be determined separately.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the formula divide by 324?

There are 12 inches in a foot and 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. Multiplying 12 by 27 gives 324 for this unit conversion.

Is the three-inch default recommended for my site?

No. It is an example input. Choose an appropriate depth for the material and site before calculating.

Does the tool round up to a supplier order size?

No. It shows a continuous volume estimate. Apply the supplier’s actual increment and minimum outside the tool.

Should I subtract existing mulch?

Use the additional depth you intend to add, based on your assessment of existing material. Do not enter the full final depth if only a top-up is needed.

Why can the displayed volume times price differ by a few cents?

The displayed volume is rounded for readability. Costs use the full calculated volume before final currency rounding.
