What is this podcast editing backlog calculator?
This calculator compares weekly editing capacity with incoming episode volume. The difference is the capacity available to reduce the starting backlog. It rounds completed capacity down and clearance time up to whole working weeks.
How to use the calculator
Count comparable episodes waiting. Enter productive team editing hours and average hours per episode. Add the weekly arrival count. Include normal quality checks in the effort estimate so unfinished review work is not treated as complete.
Check the input assumptions
Review the help text beneath each field before calculating. Enter amounts in US dollars where shown and use consistent units. Change one assumption at a time to understand which inputs affect your result.
Formula and worked example
Example calculation
A 24-hour weekly editing budget at four hours per episode supports six episodes. Two new arrivals leave four episodes of weekly backlog reduction. A starting backlog of 12 clears in three modeled weeks.
These numbers illustrate the calculation; they are not recommended rates or industry benchmarks.
How to interpret your result
If net reduction is zero, all capacity is consumed by new work. If it is negative, the queue grows. Compare reduced intake or additional productive hours before committing a recovery date.
What the estimate leaves out
Episodes are assumed comparable and work is pooled across the team. The model excludes release calendars, approval waits, staff absences, and variation in arrivals.
Frequently asked questions
What if capacity equals incoming work?
An existing backlog will not shrink because no spare capacity remains.
Why show zero weeks for an empty queue?
There is no starting backlog to clear, even if future arrivals could create one. Check net weekly reduction as well.
Can I enter fractional new episodes?
This form uses whole weekly arrivals. Choose a representative whole-week planning scenario.
Are these calendar weeks?
They are working-week planning periods based on the hours you enter, not guaranteed dates.
Does adding hours always add an episode?
Only after enough hours are available for another complete episode under the whole-unit model.
